After Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made violent comments toward Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh on Wednesday, he was quickly brought back to reality by Chief Justice Roberts.
“This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside. Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell them that ‘You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.’ Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.”
Immediately, Schumer tried to walk back his comments, alleging that they were being misconstrued by the media. He is attempting to slink back from view but thankfully the media and Republicans in Congress are not letting him get away with this dangerous rhetoric.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell publicly reprimanded Schumer on the Senate floor on Thursday, much to Schumer’s embarrassment.
“There is nothing to call this except a threat.”
He also called Schumer out for trying to walk back his comments after the fact.
“But if he cannot even admit to saying what he said, we certainly cannot know what he meant. At the very best his comments were astonishingly reckless and extremely irresponsible.”
Senator Chuck Grassley also voiced his concerns.
“At best, it was an injection of partisan politics into the process that should be immune to these justices. At worst it was a threat targeting two sitting members of the Supreme Court.”
Senator Josh Rawley R-MO went a step further and said he may introduce a measure to formally censure Schumer.
“”I would call on Schumer to apologize, but we all know he has no shame. So tomorrow I will introduce a motion to censure Schumer for his pathetic attempt at intimidation of #SupremeCourt.””
No doubt Schumer and his team are scrambling to contain the fallout from this but this should be a warning to the rest of the Democrats that this won’t fly in President Trump’s America.
